I remember hearing tam-rap for the first time somewhere in the early 90's. Many small time rappers who unfortunately didn't see the big picture due to lack of viewer enthusiasm!! People were all goo-goo-gaa-gaa over Apache indian and Snow. Hindi rappers had a go at it too, I remember Baba Sehgal and a dude called Stylebhai. Baba still makes an appearance on some weird show in TV. The other fella has faded into oblivion!!! Cut back into early 2004!! Blaze makes a comeback of sorts with A.R.Rahman's tunes!! It was nice to see a revival of something i really liked!! He proved to the people he was not a 1 hit wonder and continued to make collaborations with Sivamani and new gen fusion percussionists!! Then came out a remixed version of an obscure tamil song from the 80's by Ilayaraja. The Black eyed peas made history with this remix
The song made the tamil masses world wide sit up and notice!! Tamil Rap was taking shape. Although this was an english version, people saw opportunity. The best to make use of it was a malaysian Yogi B who got this out ASAP!!!
That did it!!! Tamil Rap was out to a world wide audience finally!! People in germany, poland were swinging to this although they could'nt make head of tail of what the song meant!! Yogi B continued his winning streak with an album aptly titled 'Vallavan'. Literally translated that means "The brave one". I loved the song and my ipod probably would have played it over a thousand times!! But still fascinating!!!
Enter mid 2007! Blaze is still rapping and going great guns!! But his tunes are based on the jamaican wave!! Everyone likes it but after 3 songs, it gets kind of repetitive!! Not so if you are on dope that is!! Heheheee!! Yogi B decides to continue and brings this out!!
The entire nation is swooning with this even today!!! Absolutely fantastic use of the turn table and voice mods!! Today as i passed a few music stores, Remix tamil albums are back!! Prominently displayed at places like Music world and Landmark, places that used to shudder at anything thats Tamil and the like!! I'm enjoying it and am sure you've let the video buffer itself and are enjoying the same!! I ain't biased but i still feel tamil music has genuine talent and needs a wider audience, that too in a nation that treats every other language other than hindi as a downtrodden kind!! Party on boyz!! It's time to return the kicking!!!
